Managed and completed five distinct client web application development projects for three distinct clients using PHP, Perl, JavaScript, CSS, HTML, and other related web technologies. They were each comprised of tight deadlines with difficult technical specifications and in one case required that I hire two additional resources as sub contractors.

 

 

SAIC at NASA                                                                                              September ‘04 to December ‘04 

PHP Developer   

 

·         PHP Developer on a small, specialized project team reporting to the Office of the CIO at NASA Redstone.

·         Implemented a site wide NASA custom software inventory, dashboard and reporting tool for the CIO's personal use. This system maintained an inventory of the hundreds of custom software development efforts underway at NASA, and provided a window into resource management, duplication of efforts and opportunities related to software development within the NASA organization at Redstone.

·         Supported the project manager with all phases of the project from analysis and customer requirement gathering, to managing the actual hands on development on a daily basis. This project primarily consisted of work using PHP and MySQL.  

·         This project was initially started with Perl by other developers but aborted when their team encountered other priorities, then was given to our project team to continue. First with Perl and then later conversion of the initial Perl applications to PHP became a requirement to adhere to newly released NASA web application coding standards. Our small team was responsible for this code conversion in accordance with the project manager schedule and task requirements.

Lead Perl developer, as well as managing version control and platform configuration management for an initiative consisting of a small team of myself and three others responsible for porting all COBOL applications on Vanderbilt's HP3000 mainframe to Linux compatible code running on standard Linux Red Hat SE Servers.

·         Implemented Perl code used to batch process large data files, and to handle replicable tasks such as COBOL program conversion and platform port translations.

·         Recreated over 400 HP3000 MPE job control scripts into shell compatible scripts utilizing a combination of Perl code and Linux shell code in a Bash shell environment. Much of our code conversion for these programs was managed and implemented using Perl scripts.

General Electric - Global eXchange Services (GE/GXS)                            September ‘98 to February ‘01

Internet Application Lead Developer

 

·         Lead Perl/Oracle/Internet Developer in which the position required Perl, JavaScript, HTML and a small amount of Java development.

·         Assisted with direction, design, development and commercial deployment of the world's first fully Perl driven, Internationalized and Localized, enterprise-scale, web-based Electronic Document Interchange (EDI) application into five national languages and localized currency/date formats supporting many thousands of subscribers in more than a dozen countries.

·         Received mention in an upcoming O'Reilly Publishing "Nutshell" book on the topic of Software Internationalization to be published in mid-2001.

·         Architect of two Perl import/export functions for a pair of windows based desktop application products allowing them to interface in real time with the GE/GXS internet based EDI application described above and then batch transfer EDI document files into back end systems located on offsite customer networks. These functions were being considered by GXS and the US Patent Office for the award of a proprietary software patent.

·         Produced complete sites, online catalogs, search engines and e-commerce applications using Perl, Unix, Linux and Windows based technology.

·         Performed project management tasks for team projects as well as supporting development and consulting requirements for projects and clients not requiring a multi-resource team. The majority of projects for our more than 100 clients were done with Perl against Oracle, or SQL server. Largest projects completed were: 1) A JavaScript wysiwyg web based chemical equation editor and publication tool utilizing greek and mathematical symbols not ordinarily produced in fonts or on keyboards not unlike modern web based embedded wysiwyg HTML editors, An online marketing demographics tool and an annual conference trade show registration/online virtual trade show system for the American Association of Clinical Chemists which was later also used for the Asian, Pan American Pacific League; and 2)A complete web site for the National Business Aviation Association and 3) A large zip code driven lobbying tool for a well known lobbyist group.

Online Systems Analyst/Developer

 

·         Served as on-site systems analyst, intranet administrator and web developer for the United States Federal Highway Administration for Human Resources.

·         Created a Perl-based highly secured Intranet for the FHWA human resources department and implemented the Agency's first trials of electronic forms and digital signatures for the delivery of interoffice documents via internal networks. Project work also done for the US Coast Guard.

·         Created an educational web site covering the topic of "Careers in Transportation" to support a Government-wide Presidential Educational Initiative, garnering an award for the design from the United States Secretary of Transportation & Presidential cabinet member, Rodney Slater.

·         Directed and produced a national "Chat with the Secretary" day, involving fifty elementary schools nationwide in an online live chat room environment. The Secretary joined the chat room and spoke back to the students via a typist from a podium, while on stage in front of 1500 Washington DC school children visiting a career day at Ronald Reagan National Airport in Washington D.C. This event was televised live on location by CNN.
